My biggest pet peeve with Blown Away was its solemnity. Longer episodes and longer seasons could help with this issue, but then you’d lose Blown Away‘s charming zippiness. I watched about half the season and still don’t have a handle on some of the contestants. However, it might be too easy to breeze through episodes. Another boon for Blown Away? Each episode is only 30 minutes long making it an easy binge. Hard-working, earnest characters - but characters. As you might imagine, the art of glass blowing attracts unique characters. The show also has a fairly interesting array of contestants. If that’s too high brow for you, yes, there is a makeshift furnace they use they call a “glory hole.” Glass blowing is nothing if not earthily erotic. First of all, someone literally needs to get on their knees and they have to blow hard through a long tube. As it turns out, a lot of glass blowing owes itself to double entendres. The art of glass blowing might be esoteric to casual viewers, but the show quickly explains the basics. At the end of each episode, the glass art is judged and the glass blower with the worst piece is eliminated.Īll in all, Blown Away has a lot going for it. Think Project Runway, but instead of being able to ask their models to help them sew hems last minute to “make it work,” if the glass blowers make a mistake, the whole thing shatters. No matter their background, each artist on Blown Away has to create a work of glass art that not only reflects the chosen brief, but is finished with flare in the scant time allotted. Like many great reality competition shows, Blown Away takes a group of talented craftsman and throws them into the furnace. The only problem is that Blown Away‘s first season could use a little more time cooking in the - what to the blowers call it? ah yes… - glory hole. So a glass blowing competition with a cheeky title? Count me in. Forged in Fire tickled me from the first, the old school bakers of The Great British Baking Show have given me joy in times of stress, I learned about couture from Project Runway marathons, and I even love me some Knight Fight. I’ve never been shy about how much I love reality competition shows based around a noble craft. The moment I learned that Netflix was producing an original glass-blowing reality competition show called Blown Away, I knew I had to see it.
